Five Families

Genovese, Gambino, Bonnano, Colombo and Lucchese. For decades these Five Families ruled New York and built the American Mafia (or Cosa Nostra) into an underworld empire. Today, the Mafia is an endangered species, battered and beleaguered by aggressive investigators, incompetent leadership, betrayals and generational changes that produced violent and unreliable leaders and recruits. A twenty year assault against the five families in particular blossomed into the most successful law enforcement campaign of the last century. Selwyn Raab's Five Families is the vivid story of the rise and fall of New York's premier dons from Lucky Luciano to Paul Castellano to John Gotti and more. The book also brings the reader right up to the possible resurgence of the Mafia as the FBI and local law enforcement agencies turn their attention to homeland security and away from organized crime.

Five Families

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 49. Chapters: Gambino crime family, Lucchese crime family, Genovese crime family, Bonanno crime family, Colombo crime family. Excerpt: The Lucchese crime family is one of the "Five Families" that controls organized crime activities in New York City, U.S., within the nationwide criminal phenomenon known as the Mafia (or Cosa Nostra). Originally put together by Gaetano "Tommy" Reina in the early 1920s up until his murder in 1930, their illicit activities include profiting from labor and construction racketeering, illegal gambling, loansharking, extortion, drug trafficking, money laundering, hijacking, fraud, fencing and murder for hire. The family was taken over by Gaetano "Tommy" Gagliano during the Castellammarese War until his death in 1951. The family under Gagliano was peaceful and low key, concentrating their criminal actives in the Bronx, Manhattan and New Jersey. The next boss was Tommy "Three-Finger Brown" Lucchese who turned the family around and became one of the most powerful Commission members. Lucchese teamed up with Gambino family boss Carlo Gambino to control organized crime in New York City together. When Lucchese died of natural causes in 1967, Carmine Tramunti controlled the family for a brief time; he was arrested in 1973. With his release from prison, Lucchese's successor Anthony "Tony Ducks" Corallo gained control of the family. Corallo was very secretive and soon became one of the most powerful members of the Commission. Corallo was arrested and tried in the famous Commission case of 1986. Corallo decided to put Vittorio "Vic" Amuso and Anthony Casso in charge of the family. Casso was soon promoted to underboss and the family barely survived the reign. Casso, fearing arrest in the early 1990s, kept ordering those he felt unloyal to be murdered. The former street boss for Casso Alphonse "Little Al" D'Arco fear...

Never Truth

Sofia My life fractured when I was only five years old. I thought I’d never be whole again, but a boy helped piece me back together, one day at a time. Nico Conti became my world—ten years later, he shattered my heart. He took away the light, so I learned to see in the dark. Now he’s come back, trying to explain away his absence and pick up where we left off. He doesn’t understand everything’s changed. I’m not the same girl he left behind, but he doesn’t seem to care. He wants all of me. That’s more than I’m willing to give. Nico They say you don’t know what you’ve lost until it’s gone, but that wasn’t true. I knew exactly how devastating it would be to lose Sofia, and I did it anyway. I thought our separation would be permanent, but I’ve suddenly been forced back into her life. Walking away once was hard enough; I’m not strong enough to leave her again. Now that I’ve seen her, tasted her, I have to make her mine. Seven years ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life. I plan to do everything in my power to correct that mistake, even if it means coming clean about the past. There’s a chance the secrets I carry will push her further away, but that’s a risk I’ll have to take. Sofia Genovese was made for me, and I’m determined to win her back. **Never Truth is the second book in The Five Families Series but can be read as a standalone novel.

New Voices From Iceland

This book presents a study of the perspectives and experiences of 36 disabled young adults, some of their parents, teachers and friends, on coming of age as a disabled person in Iceland. The young people of the study belong to the first generation of disabled children and youth to grow up with normalisation and inclusion in school and society as the law of the land. The aim is to describe, explore and interpret the social construction of disabled adulthood within culture and society, and to describe how inclusive and exclusionary processes within families, school and society, impact young disabled persons' claims to adulthood. The study is located within disability studies, and within a social constructivist, interpretative framework, involving interviews and document analysis. This volume focuses on the emergence of young disabled adulthood and on how families, general or segregated special education and special or generic support systems and relationships impact that process. The lesson learned form this book apply to the disabled everywhere.

The Haymakers

Making hay has always been hard work, just about the hardest work on a farm. Spanning 150 years, The Haymakers tells a story of the labor and heartbreak suffered by five families struggling to make the hay that fed their livestock, a story not just about grass, alfalfa, and clover, but also about sweat and fears, toil and loss. The Haymakers is an epic -- the history of man's struggle with nature as well as man's struggle against machines. It relates the story of farmers and their obligations to their families, to the animals they fed, and to the land they tended. Hoffbeck also documents and preserves the commonplace methods of haymaking. He describes the tools and the methods of haymaking as well as the relentless demands of the farm. Using diaries, agricultural guidebooks and personal interviews, the folkways of cutting, raking, and harvesting hay have been recorded in these chapters. In the end, this book is not so much about agricultural history as it is about family history, personal history -- how farm families survive, even persevere.
